Becoming more bike friendly the subject of an upcoming town meeting

Your thoughts and ideas are needed on how to make the City of Winona and Winona County more bicycle friendly. The public is invited to attend a town meeting in Winona August 17 to talk about how to improve opportunities to ride bikes for both recreation and transportation in the area. The meeting will also include a progress report on the Mississippi River Trail bicycle route that extends from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico. The meeting will take place in the Minnesota State College Southeast Technical main campus room next Tuesday from 5–7 p.m.

Deadline nears for 861 bus transportation

If you're the parents of a District 861 student that is eligible for bus service, you must submit a written bus registration form to the transportation office by 3:00 pm this Friday in order for bus service to begin on September 7. Letters with bus schedule information will be mailed to families the last week of August. School transportation officials say late registrations will be processed after school starts and parents will have to transport students until scheduling is arranged.

Winona business reports burglary

A burglary at a downtown Winona business was reported to Winona Police late last week. Deputy Chief Tom Williams said a burglary was reported Friday morning at Baker's Shoes on East Third Street. Williams said an employee called after noticing a window in the back of the building had been broken out with a brick. Police believe the perpetrator crawled through the broken window to get inside. Williams said the only thing reported missing at this time is around $10.00 in cash from the register. The employee told police the break–in occurred sometime between 5:00 p.m.

Ragnar Relay returns to Winona

The Ragnar Relay returns to Winona for the second year this month. The Ragnar Relay is billed as "a 193–mile party with 11 of your best friends." The morning of August 20, over 300 teams of runners will invade Winona's Levee Park for the race. The relay features teams of 12 whose team members will run three and eight mile legs along the Mississippi River from Winona to Minneapolis in a 24–hour race. The course is divided into 36 legs with each team member running three of those legs. Participants can choose which legs they run. Each team is allowed two support vehicles.

Minnesota and Winona gears up for Tuesday's primary

Minnesota voters head to the polls tomorrow to whittle down the field of candidates in preparation for the general election in November. The polls open Tuesday morning at 7:00 and will remain open until 8:00 p.m. If you are unsure where you will vote, the Minnesota Secretary of State's office website has a precinct locator. You can find it at www.sos.mn.us.gov. Winona residents will be narrowing the number of candidates in several key races.

One injured in Highway 61 mishap

One person received minor injuries in an accident last night involving a car and a motorcycle. The Minnesota State Patrol reports a car driven by 19–year–old Benjamin Richardson of Winona was making a turn onto northbound Highway 61 from Winona County Road 7 near LaMoille and sideswiped a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle driven by 63–year–old Keith Staff of Minnesota City. Staff was treated for minor injuries at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse.

Two Wisconsin men wanted on theft and criminal damage charges

Two Wisconsin men have been summoned to appear in Winona County District Court for their roles in a sting of thefts from pop machines. Charges of first degree criminal damage to property and theft have been filed against 19–year–old Brent Brian Peterson of Onalaska. A co–defendant, 19–year–old Jordan Milo Lee Johnson from Holmen has been charged with aiding and abetting first degree criminal damage to property, aiding and abetting theft and receiving stolen property.

Winona City Council to hold public hearing Aug. 16.

The Winona City Council will hold a public hearing next week to consider amending the city code. The amendment concerns allowing retail and service, eating and drinking establishments and automotive service and farm implement businesses to be built in the M–1 light manufacturing and Warehouse Zoning District. The hearing will be held August 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Winona City Hall council chambers.

Special program tonight at Whitewater State Park

Whitewater State Park has an interesting program planned for tonight. Stalag Whitewater: Prisoner of war camp at the State Park 1944–45" tells the story of Winona Countys' only WW II POW camp. Soldiers from Hitler's Afrika Korps spent the summers of 1944 and 1945 in Minnesota. They were put to work in fields, woods and canning plants across Minnesota. Car slams into house. No one injured

No one was injured when a car crashed into an East Broadway home Wednesday morning. According to Winona Police, the car, a 1999 Toyota Camry driven by 51–year–old Terry Hermanson of Winona, was eastbound on Broadway. Reports state Hermanson was travelling at an estimated 40 to 45 miles per hour when the car jumped the curb near Chatfield Street and struck a house located at 856 East Broadway. The impact damaged the home's front steps and slightly damaged the foundation. Hermanson was reportedly treated at Winona Health and released.
