Freshman invade WSU
In the interest of your personal sanity, you may want to avoid Huff Street and any other street near the Winona State University campuses. Today is move–in day for hundreds of freshmen students who begin their college orientation this week. WSU vice president for student life and development, Connie Gores, said the new students would be kept busy with various activities including a dance Thursday night. Some students will be moving into brand new territory. Two new dorms, New Center West and New Hall East, were completed over summer and will house students for the first time.
Goodview K-9 officer dies
A freak accident has caused the death of the Goodview Police K–9 officer. Police Chief Kent Russell said "Hero" died late last week after becoming entangled in a cable that controlled a kennel door. Russell said the cable was attached to the kennel ceiling with eye hooks. He said the dog pulls on the end of the cable to open the kennel door. Russell said when he arrived at the office Friday morning at 7:00, he found Hero lying in the kennel with the cable tightly wrapped around his hind quarters.
KC Club sold
The Winona Knights of Columbus Hall may be destined for apartment rentals. The Winona County Record Office confirmed the sale of the Knights of Columbus Club located at 64 East Fifth Street last Thursday to Bluff City Properties 4, LLC for $285,000. The sale also included furnishings totaling $38,000. Sale documents indicate Bluff City plans to convert the property to six residential apartment units.
861 School board to meet Thursday
The Winona Area Public Schools Board will discuss the open District 2 seat when it meets this week. District 2 has been without board representation since June 30 when Brian Neil tendered his resignation from the school board. The board is not expected to take any action on the matter this week. Other agenda items include a discussion to revisit whether or not the district would continue to authorize any Charter Schools. The District 861 School Board meets Thursday evening at 6:00 in council chambers of Winona City Hall.
Winona County Board to meet Tuesday
The Winona County Board of Commissioners is still haggling over a proposed county zoning ordinance. At the board's meeting Tuesday night, it will recess to meet as a Committee of the Board to discuss non–conformity issues. Commissioners will reconvene to discuss the hiring or appointment of an interim county attorney in the wake of Chuck MacLean's resignation. The Winona County Board meets Tuesday night at 7:00 in the board room of the Winona County Government Center. It will be broadcast on local government access channel 19.
Three injured in I-90 rollover
Three people where injured when the car they were in left I–90 and rolled in the median Sunday morning. The Minnesota State Patrol reports Deborah Resman, Michael Resman and their daughter, Jayna Resman, all of Rochester each received non–life threatening injuries as a result of the accident. The patrol said the Resman vehicle, a 1998 Chevrolet pickup, was eastbound on Interstate–90 when it left the roadway, entered the median and rolled over. The accident happened just east of Minnesota Highway 76 near Ridgeway.
Tractor rollover injures Dakota man
A tractor pulling a chopper rolled over in a Winona county ditch injuring the operator. The Winona County Sheriff's Department reports on Saturday at around 6:20 p.m., 48–year–old Edward John Berg, Jr., of Dakota was eastbound on Dakota Valley Drive about a mile west of Winona County Road 101 when Berg said the streering on the tractor turned hard to the left. Reports state Berg said he could not correct the problem and entered the ditch where the tractor and chopper rolled over on top of him, trapping his arm.
Winona home burglarized
A Winona resident reports someone entered his home and garage in Valley Oaks Sunday. Winona Police say the owner of a home on River Oaks Court in the Valley Oaks subdivision called Sunday shortly after noon to report a person had taken items from his vehicle and inside the home. Deputy Chief Tom Williams said the unidentified 47–year–old male told investigators entry was gained through a side service door. Missing from a unlocked vehicle in the garage are a radar detector, a GPS unit, a CD case with several CD's, a checkbook and a calculator.
12 mailboxes vandalized near St. Charles
The Winona County Sheriff's Department is investigating several vandalism incidents that happened over the weekend in the St. Charles area. Chief Deputy Ron Ganrude said at least 12 mailboxes were damaged and a house shot with paintballs in an area southeast of St. Charles along county road 35. Ganrude said St. Charles Police had received a call of a pickup driving through the high school parking lot, shooting paintballs at the school van. Officers later located several teenage boys and identified them as possible suspects. Investigation into the incidents continues.
Lock your car doors...7 cars entered over weekend in Winona
Winona Police are reminding car owners to lock their car doors after seven vehicles were broken into late Friday night or early Saturday morning. The first incident was reported to police at 7:17 Saturday morning where a wallet was taken from an unlocked car in the 600 block of Harriet Street. At 7:44 am Saturday, a woman called to say her pocket book was missing from her unlocked car parked in the 600 block of Wilson Street. Police report both the wallet and pocket book were later found on the ground at 368 West Sarnia Street. Money was missing from both.
