Woman admits to reporting false burglary

A woman who was afraid to tell her employer about a broken computer, has been charged with falsely reporting a crime. Winona police were investigating a reported burglary at Premier Auto Glass when an employee, identified as Bobi Jo Scholgel of Winona, admitted she had made the incident up. Scholgel told investigators that she had broken a lap top computer and didn't know what to do. The burglary was reported on Saturday. Scholgel had told police someone had used her key to gain entry to the business and take the computer.

Man referred in domestic assault

Charges have been referred against a Winona man after police say he punched and then tried to choke a woman. Deputy Chief Tom Williams said William Joseph Flemming has been referred to the county attorney for charges of domestic assault and domestic assault–strangulation. Williams said officers responded to a home in the 450 block of Sioux Street on a 9–1–1 hang up at about 9:15 p.m. Monday. When officers arrived, Flemming was gone, but they spoke with the 46–year–old female victim.

Annual Winter Hazard Awareness Week this week

Seasoned Minnesotans may claim that nothing about a Minnesota winter could surprise them, but statistics say otherwise. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and a group of seven partners are sponsoring the annual Winter Hazard Awareness Week. This year's event, which runs through November 13, focuses on preparedness and prevention, and adds a new "What's Your Winter?" online photo contest. Amateur photographers are invited to submit photographs in four different categories. Submissions will be displayed on the website.

Highway 14 to reopen

Minnesota Department of Transportation officials say Highway 14 between Winona and Stockton will reopen at 3:30 p.m. Eastbound and westbound lanes were closed this morning following a three-vehicle accident on Stockton Hill this morning at 8:00.

Stockton Hill accident closes Highway 14

An accident involving at least three vehicles forced the closure of Highway 14 west of Winona. The accident, involving a semi and two passenger vehicles, happened this morning shortly after 8:00 east of Stockton on Stockton Hill. At least one person was taken to Winona Health for treatment. The Minnesota Department of Transportation said it closed Highway 14 in both directions while the state patrol investigated the accident scene and while crews cleaned up debris. The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the accident.

"Gifts for Winona" deadline Nov. 20

Qualified families have two more weeks to apply for gift giving assistance through the Saint Mary's University "Gifts for Winona" program. Persons who need help getting holiday gifts for children and seniors in their families should contact their human service agency by November 20. Winona Police investigate burglary

Winona Police are investigating a burglary reported Friday night at a Winona business. Deputy Chief Tom Williams said the burglary at Premier Auto Glass happened sometime between 5:00 p.m. and the time of the call at 8:54 p.m. A Dell computer was reported to be the only item taken. Reports said investigators found the key in the door lock. An employee said she noticed the key missing at 8:30 p.m.

No one injured in Friday semi truck rollover

No one was injured late Friday afternoon when a semi overturned in the eastbound lanes of I–90. The Minnesota State Patrol reports the truck, driven by James Baker of Dayton, Ohio overturn after he changed lanes on a curve. Investigators believe Baker's load shifted, causing the trailer to tip onto its side and land in the ditch. The accident happened near the 242 mile marker.

Three men rescue from river after their boat capsized

Three men are safe after their fishing boat capsized this morning on the Mississippi River south of Dresbach. Winona County Sheriff Dave Brand said members of the Winona County Dive–Rescue Team and the sheriff's department were called to an area near the Dresbach boat landing at around 9:25. Brand said a boat holding an 82–year–old Iowa man, along with a 79–year–old man and a 48–year–old man from Wisconsin capsized after it was hit by a large wave. He said the men were clinging to the side of the boat when their cries for help were heard by two nearby boaters from La Crescent.

New grand jury to convene

A new grand jury will be convened for a third suspect in the murder of Ada Senenfelder of Winona. District Judge Jeffrey Thompson recently dismissed a murder indictment against James Bolstad saying the Winona County Attorney's Office introduced inadmissible evidence that prejudiced the grand jury. At a court hearing yesterday, Assistant County Attorney Tom Gort announced his offices plan to reconvene a grand jury. Bolstad was facing charges of first–degree aiding and abetting murder for the 1985 stabbing death of Ada Senenfelder. Bolstad remains in police custody.
