Goodview Council approves pursue annexation deal
The Goodview City Council voted Monday night to approve a plan to pursue annexation of part of Rollingstone Township into the city. Under the plan, the Saehler-Anderson and Gunderson-Connaughty subdivisons would become part of the City of Goodview. Residents of those areas could opt to hookup to city water and sewer service, however they would not receive any monetary aid from Goodview. The public will have a chance to voice concerns and ask questions at an upcoming town meeting scheduled for April 2, 2008 at the Elks Club.
Flood issues to be discussed at an open house
An open house to discuss flooding issues in the region is scheduled for St. Charles next week. The meeting will be held in the St. Charles Community Center March 20 at 7:00 p.m. The open house will be preceeded by a meeting of the Whitewater Joint Powers Board at 5:30 p.m. Daryl Buck with the Winona Soil and Conservation District will be the speaker. Levee Park group to meet Tuesday
The Levee At Main Task Force is scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss their plans to revitalize Levee Park. The group will discuss plans for a structure to replace the Julius C. Wilkie Steamboat Center which has fallen into serious disrepair. The Winona City Council voted in August to have the structure torn down sometime after March 31. An idea proposed by the task force would replace the Wilkie with a steamboat/river history museum and banquet facility. Whatever the group decides, it must act quickly. The city council has hinted they will examine razing the Wilkie as early as next week.
HBC Channel 25 secures broadcast rights to regional tournament
HBC Channel 25 has been authorized by the NCAA to broadcast this weekend's NCAA Division II Men's Basketball North Central Regional Tournament. HBC will begin coverage at Noon on Saturday, March 15. Check the HBC Truck Schedule link on this page soon for all games and times.
Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday
The switch to Daylight Savings Time comes a bit earlier this year. The time change takes effect Sunday morning at 2:00. Remember to "spring ahead" one hour before you head to bed Saturday night!
Former City Council candidate guilty of Assault
A former candidate for the Winona City Council was found guilty of Fifth Degree Assault by a Winona County jury Thursday. According to the Winona County Attorney's office, the verdict was returned against 40-year-old Todd Damase Ouellette after just 45 minutes of deliberation and two days of testimony. Ouellette will be sentenced April 28, 2008.
The Minnesota House passes its Bonding Bill
The Minnesota House of Representatives passed their version of the capital investment bill or bonding bill Thursday. District 31-A State Representative Gene Pelowski (DFL-Winona) said now was the time to pass a balanced bill given the current economic situtation. In its present form, the measure contains funds for remodeling Winona State University's Memorial Hall and upgrades for the school's heating and ventilation systems. Also included is money for extending the Root River Trail and flood area restoration in southeast Minnesota.
Dog and Cat Licenses Due
City of Winona pet owners are reminded to renew dog and cat licenses before April 1. The license fee is $8.00 per animal. A rabies certificate must be presented at the time of application. After April 1 a $5.00 administrative fee will be applied in addition to the license fee. Licenses can be purchased in the Finance office at Winona City Hall.
Man's legs broken when his pickup runs him over
A Lewiston man had both legs broken when his pickup truck ran over him Tuesday night. The Winona County Sheriff's Department said 63-year-old Lawrence Nelson was transported by Lewiston Ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital for treatment following the incident that happened just south of County Road 25 on Rolling Hills Road in Utica Township. Reports say a piece of lumber fell off Nelson's truck and he had stopped to retrieve it. However, he told investigators he failed to put the vehicle in "park" when he got out of the cab.
Winona Health Auxiliary's "Follies" program begins tonight
The curtain rises tonight on the Winona Health Auxilliary's musical variety show "Fabulous Fifties Follies." The show runs Thursday night through Saturday and features local singers, dancers and live music from the decade of the 1950s. The shows director, Sherry Clarke, says the program has been a lot of fun to put together. Tickets are available at both Midtown Foods locations, Hy-Vee, the Glady D. Miller Gift Shop and at the door. All performances will be on the Winona State University Performing Arts Center Main Stage. Show times are 7:30 each night with a Saturday matinee at 2:00 p.m.
