DNR investigating alleged Winona County deer poaching incident

Conservation officers continue to investigate a Winona County man suspected of poaching deer. Acting on tips from hunters, Department of Natural Resource officers paid an unannounced visit to the man's home on Quarry Hill Road last Friday night. Officials say charges could be referred against the unidentified man yet this week. While executing a search warrant, authorities reported they seized numerous guns, a rack of antlers from an illegally taken deer and deer bait. According to reports, two hunters may have killed as many as eight deer out of season or by using bait.

Winona and Goodview City Councils meet tonight

The Winona City Council will continue a public hearing on bluff land protection tonight. At its last meeting, council voted to continue the hearing on the bluffland protection ordinance so city staff could have time to research answers to clarifly some issue raised during the previous meeting. If council is satisfied with the document after tonight's public hearing, it could move to adopt the ordinance or council members could ask for another continuence. Tonight's meeting begins at 7:30 in City Hall Council Chambers. The meeting will be televised on Channel 19.

Event benefits Dakota Alliance founders

A benefit was held over the weekend to paid tribute to the couple credited with beginning the process of reconciliation with the area's original inhabitants. Rod and Shirley Steiner started the reconciliation process between the Dakota people and the residents of Winona which is highlighted each June by the Great Dakota Gathering in Lake Park. The evening featured a silent auction and music. Proceeds raised from the night will go to support the Winona–Dakota Unity Alliance.

Winona Health announces H1N1 vaccination clinic

Winona Health and Winona County Community Health Services will hold an H1N1 vaccination clinic at Winona Clinic in Winona. The first of two clinics is scheduled for Monday, November 16 from 5:30–8:30 pm with a second scheduled for Thursday, November 19 from 5:30–8:30 pm.

Wabasha family charged in shoplifting incident

Let's see if you can follow this saga...Winona Police have charge a Wabasha mother, father and their teenage son in connection with a shoplifting incident on October 29 at Winona's Fleet Farm. Deputy Chief Tom Williams said the 39–year–old mother is being charged with obstructing the legal process, providing false information to police, liability of crimes of another and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Her 15–year–old son faces charges of theft, giving police a false name and date–of–birth and obstruction. His 41–year–old father is charged with theft.

Korean court officals visit Winona County courts

A group of Korean judges and court administration officials are visiting Winona County. The group of four judges and four court officials are here as part of day and a half visit to observe how the state court jury system works. They will also visit with district court judges and county prosecutors about the judges' role in a jury trial and how oral arguments are used. Korea has just recently adopted a jury system using the U.S. as a model for trial procedures. The visit is being facilitated by the National Center for State Courts International Visitor program.

Winona County foreclosure rates are down for '09

While the rate of home foreclosures continues to rise across the country, Winona County is seeing its numbers going the other way. According to the Winona County recorder's office, 69 properties have been foreclosed in 2009. That number is down about 7 percent when compared to the same time last year, while the national number is up by 19 percent from 2009. Thank-you Veteran's

Today is a day to honor America's soldiers. On this Veteran's Day, students at Winona Senior High School paid tribute to the men and women who have fought and those now fighting for freedom. At Veteran's Park, veterans held their annual program, highlighted by speakers and the playing of taps. At midnight last night, Winona area veterans began a 24–hour vigil to honor veterans and the sacrifices they made to defend freedom around the world.

County votes not to vote on planning ordinance

Around 50 county residents attended last night's Winona County board meeting to voice concerns over the proposed zoning ordinance. A public hearing on the 350 page document, that once approved will regulate everything from building projects to manure spill response procedures, was the first item of business on the commissioners agenda. Some residents in the audience saw the document as too restrictive in some areas, while not enough in others. Prior to the public hearing, board chair Dwayne Voegeli announced that an expected final vote on the matter last night would not take place.

Winona County to consider adopting new planning ordinance

County residents will have one final opportunity to speak out on the proposed Winona County zoning ordinance at tonight's county board meeting. The Winona County commissioners will consider adoption of the document after the public hear which is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the board room of the Winona County Government Center.
