"10 Days of Giving" is underway
Merchants Bank's yearly food collection to restock the shelves at Volunteer Services, is officially underway. The 20th Annual "10 Days of Giving" was kicked–off this morning in the Merchants Bank Downtown lobby when the first gifts of food were presented by area school children. Volunteer Services Executive Director Sandra Burke said they have definitely seen an increase in use of the food shelf during the course of the year. With the nation in financial crisis, many fear this year's giving may be down from previous years. Winona Mayor Jerry Miller acknowledged that while times may be tough, Winonans always rise to the occasion.
Donations of dried and canned goods are needed. Cash donations are also welcomed. Cash is used to purchase vouchers for fresh meat and produce. Volunteer Services can purchase $2.00 worth of food for every dollar donated through the food bank network. Donation barrels are located in stores, banks and churches throughout the county.
