Low flying plane raises concerns
Winonans may have thought they were under attack this morning when a twin–engine plane circled the city. But the only thing under attack was the European Gypsy Moth. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is spraying for the invasive species after pockets of the moths were found in Winona and Houston Counties last year. Spraying operations in the county cover 5200 acres near Winona, 1,700 acres in Hart Township and just over 16,000 acres surrounding Kings Bluff. Houston County spraying operations cover almost 14,000 acres located to the east–southeast of Rushford in an area known as Oak Ridge. Gypsy moth caterpillars strip trees of their leaves and can contribute to tree mortality.
